Chapter 2: Crashed
Complete disaster….. WE CRASHED into the sand due to the steep dune.
At first, I didn’t think we would, but we did. In a fraction of a second, we crashed really hard into the sand. I remember D.S filming and a millisecond before the crash he started screaming.
BAMM!! D.S his phone, my wallet and other items flew into the dashboard.
Complete silence…
Not sure what was going on, I saw B.N. in lots of pain trying to get back into her seat due to the crash. She was in lots of pain, I could tell. The car was still running and I advised to turn off the engine. But it wasn’t turning off..
Looking at D.S. I saw blood running down his nose and the car seat was already covered in blood. He hit his head against the seat and his sunglasses cut his face.‘F*CK!!!!!!!!!!! Are you ok??.... Are you ok? D.S are you ok??’, I screamed.
I turned back to B.N asking if she was ok, which she was not..She was in lots of pain and couldn’t really respond to anything I asked. I then insisted that she say atleast something, to make sure she is ok. With lots of pain she did.
At that moment the adrenaline started kicking in. Well, I wasn’t sure if it was the adrenaline or survival mode. We then tried to turn off the engine, but without any luck. D.S. then immediately said that we had to leave the car as it could possibly blow up.
Again I asked if everyone was ok. However, B.N. was still very nauseous and couldn’t respond. Even D.S. was still in pain and still struggling with all the blood running down his nose and face. It was a horrible scene.
I stepped out of the car and heard the engine still running. We have to leave and get out of the car….now! I ran to the top of the dune, to see if there was anything near us. A feeling of disbelieve ran through me, but luckily I saw a couple of container houses around 800Meters from us. First thing that came to mind, was to run and ask for help. We obviously needed help to get out of the desert. I let D.S know I was leaving, took my phone and ran for help.
At this point, it was around 46 degrees, surrounded by sand and dust due to the strong wind. It was looked like a scene you always see on ths Discovery Channel but never think you will experience. My throat was super dry and I did not have any water. I decided to do intervals..running..walking… running walking..This to save energy, because who knew how long we’d be stuck there. My throat was getting dryer with every step I took. Again, I started thinking how this could’ve happened… why?? Why to us?? Why before leaving?? At some point I looked at my phone, I had service, which gave me some hope. However, everything around me looked the same and the 800 meters seemed endless.
Finally I arrived and started shouting for help. Knocking on the door of the first house but nobody replied…On to the next one, again no one replied. I started losing faith but didn’t stop believing there would be help in one of these houses. I ran to the third and last one, but unfortunately… there was no one.. I then fell on my knees, again asking how this could have happened. HELPP……Pleaseee helpppppp but due to my dry throat I couldn’t really scream anymore. I gave up and realized that I had to go back.
Running…walking…running… walking. How could my world have turned upside down in just a second?. I started thinking about the damaged car, which we couldn’t turn off and how the hell will we get it out of the desert? How much would it all cost? All these things running through my mind, but I tried to calm myself by saying nobody died..or so I thought..........
